Munyurangabo by Lee Isaac Chung (2008, 97 min.). After stealing a machete from a market in Kigali, Rwanda, Munyurangabo (Ngabo) and his friend, Sangwa, leave the city. Ngabo seeks justice for his parents who were killed in the genocide, and Sangwa wants to visit the home he deserted years ago. Their friendship is tested when Sangwa’s wary parents disapprove of Munyurangabo, warning that, “Hutus and Tutsis are supposed to be enemies.” The director uses Rwandan at-risk youth and their experiences to help shape this film, the first narrative feature ever made in the Kinyarwanda language. “An astonishing and thoroughly masterful debut” (Robert Koehler, Variety). Sep 6: Film – The Window

Monday, September 7th, 2009

1:00 PM – 2:25 PM

The Window by Carlos Sorin (2008, 85 min.). It is a significant day for 80-year-old Antonio: his estranged son is coming to visit. He imagines a champagne toast, an embrace, and warm words that may finally bridge the gap between them. Bedridden, he looks out at the Patagonian landscape and sees light and life, the past and the present, as he senses the future. Buoyed by his thoughts, he decides to leave the house–unseen by his faithful caretakers–to take a walk in his fields. By casting the great Uruguayan writer Antonio Larreta in the lead role, Sorin establishes a link between fiction and reality that makes the protagonist’s fears, hopes, and wishes even more palpable.
